Orioles vs. Yankees

This evening I went to another Yankees game. They won against the Orioles 17-3 with a mere 24 hits. It all happened in the 1st, where most of the runs got in. Cano, his career high 5-5.

Murakami's Kafka on the Shore

I have just recently finished reading Murakami's Kafka on the Shore. Similar to Hard-Boiled Wonderland, this story takes on two seemingly related stories that eventually clash together, metaphorically. This story became one of my favorites-- a story about two characters: Kafka Tamura, a 15 year old solitary boy who runs away from home to possibly search for his life gone mother and sister; and Nakata, an old timer who is mysteriously drawn towards Kafka's destiny.

Murakami's adds humor to the story by naming characters Johnnie Walker and Colonel Sanders, making cats talk, and make leeches, sardines, and other fish fall from the sky.

Some interesting quotes:

"There are some things we can never assign to oblivion, memories we can never erase from our memory." Just like our bodies, the only thing that stays with us for our entire lives, I instantly thought.

"Everything's a metaphor" -- Goethe

"Listening to the [Schubert's] D major, I can feel the limits of what humans are capable of-- that a certain type of perfection can only be realized through a limitless accumulation of the imperfect."

The following remarks below are SPOILERSDo not read ahead if you don't want to know what happens in the book. Srry, I just had to write about this real interesting book! hehe

After reading this book, I've started to notice a main theme that I think Murakami is trying to address. That everything and everybody is connected, no matter how far he/she/it is.

Miss Saeki~ The most interesting character in the entire story. Although mainly known as the owner of the Komura Memorial Library, hints given by Murakami as the story progresses gives the reader a sense that she is Kafka's mother--who, abandoned him at such an early age just so she could bear herself from falling in love with him. After all, Kafka is able to see the 15 year old Miss Saeki staring at Kafka on the Shore in the night in his room, and the time when he is in the cabin where the two soldiers brought him. According to Kafka, it was all natural to him, feeling as if they both have a warm connection, just like all mother's today have a connection with their own child, even though they don't realize it. Perhaps this is how Kafka feels like he is in love with Miss Saeki.

It is also interesting how, near the end of the novel, Nakata is the only one who Miss Saeki can rely on to burn her memories kept in files. Obviously, these two share a close bond. For whatever reason, Nakata is drawn into the entrance stone. He is able to seek things that are not filtered in his conscious grasp, "Until I go there, I wouldn't know" as he would say. Furthermore, according to the sources from when he was a child during the Rice Bowl Incident, his teacher stated that he was the only child who was able to find the bloody towels that she hid when she was having her period after she thought about her having sex with her husband. Futhermore, the fact that Nakata was the only one who didn't wake up from that incident is ominous itself. This concludes the transitive property: that if Kafka is connected to Miss Saeki, and Miss Saeki is connected to Nakata, then Nakata must be connected to Kafka and vice versa.

Kafka's relationship with Sakura also gives the reader that she could be his sister. Her hospitality-- aside from jerking him off for relaxation sake-- is an example. Such as letting him come by her temporary home, giving him her number on the very day they first met on the bus en route to Takamatsu, among others. Later on in the story when Kafka dreams of having sex with her when he is in Oshima's cabin is a sign of Kafka's love for her, and love, just like with Miss Saeki, means that they have some sort of connection with each other.

Although the characters in the story seem as if they are going through their own journey themselves, there are some motivators. Nakata's motivator, although hard to tell exactly, seems to be either the cats or Hoshino, the slightly indecent truck driver. Without the cats, Nakata wouldn't have anyone to talk to, despite stating himself as "not very bright". And without Hoshino, he wouldn't have gone any further from Nakano Ward. He probably would not have had the opportunity to dine, sleep, or, to put it all, live. On the other hand, Hoshino would've struggled with his job if it weren't for Nakata, stating himself that he learned more about music-- Beethoven-- and the real world surrounding him.

Kafka's motivator is the toughest, considering being connected to almost everyone in the novel. But in all honesty it seems that he is drawn to Miss Saeki the most, then probably Oshima.

There are, of course, some moments where things remain a mystery-- unable to find the last piece to the puzzle. What's the deal with Johnnie Walker and his flute composed of cats? Could he be Kafka's father? What about that blood stain on Kafka's shirt when he, for whatever reason, is in that same shrine where Colonel Sanders brings Hoshino to locate the entrance stone? Speaking of Colonel Sanders, what's his deal? Not human, basically non-existing, however allows Hoshino to have hot sex with a drop-dead gorgeous babe who studies philosophy as a major, ironically. After all, he was the one who knew where the entrance stone was. Is HE connected to Miss Saeki? And speaking of the entrance stone, that seems to be the soul of the entire story.

Let's not forget about that slimy, white "thing" that came out from the mouth of Nakata's corpse. This scene is similar to the final moments in The Wind-up Bird Chronicle, where Toru hits a thing with a baseball bat, possibly Noboru Wataya, and kills it bloodily during the night in a mysterious room under the well.

But overall this book was something else-- I enjoyed it deeply.

Mariners vs. Yankees

Today I went to another Yankees game with mom, mom's friend, and Ryo-- a teenager from Osaka. Unfortunately Yankees lost to the Mariners miserably-- score not necessary. Mariners broke their supposedly 18 game losing streak.

100 degree weather

And yes, I did go outside and it felt like standing right by a forest fire, or standing right by the eruption of Mauna Kea. The intense heat waves seeping into my body.

Never have I experienced such heat in the city. I literally couldn't breathe at first. Was this real?

Extreme Weather

The city is about to be spewed with scorching hot heat waves.

The sun is beaming, sprinklers are running, the sky is nearly fogged.

Tomorrow's predicted weather, 101 degrees.

Can it get any worse? Well, the extreme heat will supposedly simmer down around Sunday morning, news says.

Harry Potter Finale

Today I saw the last Harry Potter movie, a.k.a the Deathly Hallows part 2. Overall a very epic finale. It couldn't have ended any better.

The thing is, though, I haven't caught up on part 1, nor the previous one, nor the previous one before the previous one. Am I confusing y'all? Point is, I leaped to the finale without watching many of the previous movies in the saga. So there were some parts in the movie where I was like, huh? But still, I followed up.

Go see it.

Karaoke Birthday

I had a real great time today with my mom's friends. We went to a karaoke and sung out a lot of songs, mostly Japanese enka. It was known to be my karaoke debut, and I impressed them with my knowledge of so many traditional ones, namely Ringo Murakara.

Women's World Cup Finals: USA vs. Japan

Psyched about the upcoming Women's World Cup final: USA vs. Japan.

According to the stats, though, Japan has never really won against USA in past games.

But on July 17, things are about to get crazy.

After a brief moment of vacillation, I have decided that I will root for Japan. For many reasons. Let's goo!

でもはっきりみると以前のゲームには日本はあんまりUSAにかてなかったんです。

でも７月１７日には日本はかつんだ！

どっちのチームをおうえんするのかなりかんがえたけど、やっぱ、日本かなって思いました。

Yokoso, Japan! -- Uh, Not Quite

Never in a while have I been so insecure about something that is so incredibly normal for others. Never in a while have I vacillated for more than a few weeks. Never in a while have I been hesitant of something that I am already used to. So what's holding you back? As one would say. Although traveling internationally alone can be challenging at first, what's the challenging part if you are already used to going there with your parents? They would continue.

Now don't get me wrong here, I could go if I was forced to. In fact I could just go right off the bat. But something's holding me back. It might be the sudden transition of going from parents to alone, my nonnative Japanese tongue, or just being on a plane for 13 hours.

True, all of these nonsense concerns are just irrelevant. My mom, her friends, and my friends tell me, you're almost freaking 17 years old, you should be able to travel alone; Japanese people want to speak more English than Japanese, y'know! They understand even if you speak to them in English! In fact they would envy you for speaking to them in English! It's the chief lingua franca of the world; You're already used to being on a plane for 13 hours! You once slept for 13 hours!

So I guess I have no other excuses to blurt out. They've all been counter-argued successfully. But hey, what about the frequent earthquakes and the radiation hazards? And the fact that electricity is short, not much A/C and mosquitoes stinging your skin every second? But those aren't respectable excuses. Look at all of the citizenry in Japan! They live there, with outstanding stoicism and patience. Look at me here making concerns when I'm not even in that country.

It's not like I don't want to go to Japan; I actually do. In fact I'm positive that I would have a blast there, meeting my family that I haven't seen in quite a while; possibly meeting my childhood friend that I haven't met for more than I could remember; feasting on a wide array of traditional Japanese food; taking a refreshing bike ride along the neighborhood-- a thing I could barely experience here in the city; engaging in the Japanese culture; taking a bath; hearing that incredibly soothing female voice in the train, in the department stores, among others; buying sodas from those super cool vending machines; and urinating in those tech-savvy toilets that automatically washes your you-know-what after you finish number 2.

But I guess it's the process that troubles me before I get there. But again, these concerns are so weak that a majority of them would just say, "pshh". Just get your departure ticket, board the plane, and tadaa! You're here! There's nothing else you have to worry about! Your family's picking you up at the airport too! You barely have to work! They would say.

But it's not that. It's something else that's worrying me. I feel like they are just generalizing-- not focusing on the specifics. Rolling my portmanteau by myself at the airport is another feeling, making sure I don't miss my flight is another, the awkwardness of sitting next to a stranger in the plane for 13 hours is, in no doubt, another, especially if it's a two seater. But I'm just worrying too much, I guess. What's there to worry when I've gone to Japan with my parents for as long as I could remember? Let's see, I have a few days to consider.

Robinson Cano, second baseman for the New York Yankees, WON THE 2011 MLB HOME RUN DERBY!!! Congrats to him! His dad, Jose Cano, pitched for him and his mom spectated in the stands. As one commentator stated, it is the field of dreams.

"Flying Get"-- the most thoughtless CD title

I'm still a little unclear as to why AKB48 would name their upcoming single, "Flying Get". Supposedly, as all netizens and the media say, it just means to pre-order. They imply "fly", as flying and "get" as getting the CD or whatever, like a bird.

But in all honesty, this title is so unclear and irrelevant that I cannot even explain it in my own words. Whatever the case, I think it is one of the most thoughtless CD titles I've ever seen.

This single is set to be released on August 24th.

Yankee Shortstop Reaches 3000 Career Hits!

The veteran Yankee shortstop, Derek Jeter, finally reached another milestone, hitting his 3000th career hit, or should I say HOME RUN!!! Furthermore, he was 5-5 today with a triple shy of a cycle. "I was expecting a triple," Mariano Rivera, Yankee closer, states at the press conference. He joins the 3000 hits club, the 28th player in MLB history, the first ever Yankee to achieve 3000 hits. He is the second to hit a home run as his 3000th hit (Wade Boggs the first), the second to achieve 3000 hits while holding 3 or more World Series titles (Eddie Collins the first, with 6), and the second to have a 5-5 on his 3000th hit (Craig Biggio the first).

Before Jeter's 3000th, fans were on their feet chanting him all the way through whenever he was at bat. The fan who caught Jeter's 3000th hit baseball was later interviewed at the press conference. "I just wanted to see history," he said. And now he is part of it, like Michael Kay said. Unlike the fan who sold Barry Bonds' homerun ball on eBay or something, this fan said to the media that Jeter earned the ball. Well spoken. Nice guy.

It's also pretty fascinating how Jeter hit his 3000th at exactly 2:00 sharp.

図書館がしまる時間だった。

出た。

空をみたら雨だった。ビチョビチョで帰りました。

この経験、なんとなくさだまさしの「雨やどり」を思い出す。

でも今日の一日はすごいだるい。


あっ、そういえば２、３日前しゃべくり００７にKARAがでたな。おもしろかったな。

Mishima Murakami and Tanabata

I grabbed Mishima's Thirst For Love and read the first 50-70 pages. Something was missing when reading this. There was not a punch in the story, I thought. After all, I do respect Yukio Mishima and his powerful personality. It was just this book I had trouble bearing with. Slight boredom.

So I went off to the bookstore to get Murakami's Kafka on the Shore. After all, I am a Murakami fan. However, at the store they did not have it. They did not have it? Oh well. I guess I'll go back to Mishima.

三島由紀夫の「愛の渇き」を読んでいたが、あんまりパンチがないと思う。ま、嫌いとは言っていない。三島はすごいライターですが、この本はあんまり。。。です。
いっぽう、村上の「海辺のカフカ」を買うため、本やに行ったら。。。

Murakami's Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World

I have just recently finished reading Murakami's Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. This book is split between two seemingly different ongoing stories that ultimately clash together. This is a very scientific-esque book that was very fun to read. Murakami's humor also adds a hint to the story that makes it even greater. Two quotes I thought were interesting:

"Chubby girls in pink tend to conjure up images of big strawberry shortcakes waltzing on a dance floor."

"No matter how tired the body gets, one must never let the exhaustion enter one's thoughts."

I love the fact that he mentions so much American musicians, actors, movies, novels, among others. I am overly impressed by his knowledge of them, ranging from Stendhal's The Red and The Black　to Lauren Bacall. He also mentions Bob Dylan's Rolling Like A River Stone and how his voice sounds like a "kid standing at the window watching the rain." Lovely.

He not only Americanizes in this book, but also on most of his other works, namely Norwegian Woodwhere he refers to the green light in Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. No wonder Murakami preferred reading American novels than Japanese novels when he was a child.

Not only does he know an overwhelming amount of American things, but also Italian. In one point in this book, he writes a wide variety of Italian cuisine... IN ITALIAN! Spaghetti al pesto genovese is an example.

Because of the wide variety of references he writes in most of his novels, I feel like I learn more and more American pop culture and books and shows and all that jazz. And you might feel the same way too!

Go read it.

今日村上の「世界の終わりとハードボイルドワンダーランド」を読み終わりました。とにかくすごいノベルでした。二つのストーリがあってさいごに関連する。

4th of July Celebration

Happy 235th Birthday, America! How wonderful this day is to celebrate our troops, and our day of independence! I had a very fun time today with my mom's friends. We were lucky enough to grab a spot at a restaurant, 44&X, while watching the fireworks. Coincidentally, the mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, was enjoying his meal at this same restaurant with his friends/assistants/family prior to the start of the fireworks. I couldn't get the best picture of him, but here he is.
今夜はアメリカの誕生日でした。母さんの友達とレストランに食べながら花火を見ました。きれいな花火だったな！そのときに、なんと、ニューヨークの市長が同じレストランに食べてたゃ！あんまりよくとれなかったが、これです。ちょっと左にいる人です。わかるかな？


Despite the fanciness of this restaurant, the food was a bit complicated to order. For instance, it wasn't only chicken, but chicken with creamy potatoes, seasoning, pepper, etc. I ordered the meat loaf turkey with creamy potatoes and mushrooms. I couldn't remember the exact name of it, but it was real good.
このレストランはとてもファンシーだったから食べ物がすごいわかりにくかった。たとえば、チキンだけじゃなく、クリーミーポテトときのことターキーとミートローフがのせてある。俺はメートローフを食いました。おいしい

As usual, a mass of people were around this area, enjoying the well expected fireworks extravaganza. These were the best shots I could get from the view at the restaurant.

AKB48 2nd Janken Tournament Confirmed in September

According to the AKB48 blog, it has been confirmed that the 3rd Janken Tournament will be held at the Nippon Budoukan on September 20th. This Janken tournament will involve all of the members of AKB48 as well as 5 members from NMB48 and SKE48. The 5 members will be determined by preliminary rounds. The winner of the Janken Tournament will take the main lead in their new upcoming 24th single set to release sometime in December. The top 16, also known as Senbatsu, will also be featured in the single. Their 23th single, however, set to be released this October, will consist of the normal members.

This process, although based on sheer luck, may give minor members the opportunity to shine and take lead roles in the single. But on the other hand, popular members such as Maeda Atsuko, Shinoda Mariko, Oshima Yuko, Itano Tomomi, Minami Takahashi, Minami Minegishi, Mayu Watanabe, and others all have a likelihood of not being in the single-- a result that most fans would not end up being happy with since they merely got the most votes during the Senbatsu Election.

The results of the Janken tournament, however, is only based on the upcoming 24th single, and does not apply for all future AKB48 songs, performances, and the like. So netizens and fans should not be worried too much about the results, unless you're a die-hard AKB48 fan that meticulously focuses on every aspect of each and every member's careers and can't stand hearing their songs without a specific member :p

In all honesty, I think that this is a very interesting approach in determining who gets to be in the new single. Although it can be slightly unfair, and raise a couple of questions, it is a method that will, in no doubt, get the fans excited. If this were to be applied for all future performances, I would argue, but since it is only for their 24th single, I'd let them do their thing. But I am very curious about the mind of Akimoto Yasushi.
