Murakami's fame in the Japanese literary world has garnered enough attention that his books have become a fashion statement. In Japan, possibly due to insecurity, the jacket cover of books are usually covered with the store's wrapping when read in public, however nowadays people proudly show the jacket of Murakami's latest novel, 'Colorless Tasaki Tsukuru and the Year of His Pilgrimage'.
Appeal is one of the reasons why people overtly show the cover of his novel in public. Apparently a theory has been circulating around the Japanese media that questions that reading Murakami is considered attractive and will enhance the likelihood of people getting into relationships.
